Everybody in America thinks the genius of low carb foods is the solution to losing fast weight. I agree, it is a short term fix but definitely not a long term change. But what about the side effects of low carb dieting?

Nutrition experts have long known that these sugar alcohols:

  • Sorbitol
  • Mannitol
  • Xylitol
  • Added Fiber
  • Guar Gum
  • Chicory Extract

These are found in many low carb products and may cause digestive stress. But how much does it exactly take to create or cause a problem?

Most adults can handle about 40 to 50 grams worth, which is approximately the amount found in a low carb candy bar or a serving of sugar free ice cream. But for most, as little as 20 grams can trigger bloating and worst of all, gas.

As for right now, there’s no way to tell if your sensitive until you actually dig in. Don’t consume more than one serving per day of a product with sugar alcohols unless you know you can tolerate it.

In addition, keep in mind that sugar-free chocolate tends to contain a bigger dose of these problem ingredients than the actual low carb versions of ice cream, cookies, gum, and yogurt. The reason why, the production of these items requires more sweetener to fill in the taste.

Just look for the exact amount of sugar alcohols on the label “carbohydrates.” If a food is made with chicory extract or guar gum, it will be listed in the ingredients, but the only problem is, the label won’t tell you exactly how much the product contains.
